Commissioned and hosted by Gray Area in San Francisco, 'FREE' launched on July 4, 2026, and runs through November 4, 2026. 'FREE' invites people worldwide to send messages of solidarity to those held in U.S. detention, turning the island's carceral symbolism into a living murmuration of voices. It is viewable in AR from the San Francisco Bay, but messages can be sent from anywhere in the world through the 'FREE' button in the 4th Wall app. Anyone can read what others have sent, and all messages of solidarity are archived and will ultimately be published. The experience includes links to organizations that recognize human dignity, fight carceral injustice, and offer healing to victims of mass incarceration.
